Michael Gusenbauer is an assistant professor at the Institute of Innovation Management (ifi) at Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz. His research interest is at the crossroads of innovation and international business and complements this with investigations into global knowledge production and methods of scientific information retrieval. Specifically, Michael is investigating multiple aspects in offshoring of innovation with special focus on conceptual fuzziness, cultural and institutional differences as well as differences between small and large companies and the effects on innovativeness. His research has been published in outlets such as the Journal of Management Studies and Academy of Management Proceedings. Michael is regular reviewer for journals such as the Review of Managerial Science and he is a regular speaker at international business conferences such as ISPIM and AOM Annual Meetings.

Michael contributes to a more systematic progress in management science by specializing on meta-analyses and systematic reviews as qualitative and quantitative methods of synthesising the exponentially growing scientific knowledge. Michael is not only utilizing these methods, but adds new insights from this research on advanced information retrieval techniques. In his current investigations of systematic search heuristics and search tools Michael collaborates with neighbouring Institutes at JKU as well as with the Technical University Vienna.

In his teaching Michael offers students theoretical insights into the fundamental questions in innovation and innovation management. Being an entrepreneur himself, he brings to the classroom his practical insights from his personal interest in business model innovation and business creation. Additionally, Michael brings his extensive knowledge on information retrieval techniques to the classroom teaching national and international students how to search better scientifically and in their daily business. His students profit from his professional experience in co-founding das Kommod l Coworking, a personal coworking space for creatives in Vienna, and in working for an internationally operating management-consulting firm in the energy sector.

Michael holds a PhD from Johannes Kepler University Linz with guest research visits at the Alliance Manchester Business School (UK) and the Queensland University of Technology (AUS). He obtained his master degree from the WU Vienna University of Economics and Business where he specialised in Entrepreneurship and Innovation and International Business. He gained international research experience as part of the NEURUS program where he spent one semester for field research in the United States. During his diploma, Michael studied at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA) and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (USA) and worked for the Austrian Trade Commission in Hong Kong.
